This Newcomer Settlement Program (NSP) Settlement Worker, will be a member of the ROMA Program team and will report to the Program Manager. The NSP Settlement Worker will be responsible for assisting newcomer clients through one-on-one interviews, information and referrals, as well as translation and interpretation. This position will also be responsible for connecting with outside agencies and organizing education seminars. This position will require work with other departments within CultureLink to access resources that will help clients overcome settlement barriers. CultureLink works within an anti-oppression framework and is committed to equity.


  • Responsible for connecting with various outside agencies such as social assistance, health centers, housing connections, language training programs, etc.
  • Responsible for settlement work from filling out the Basis of Claim Form to defending service-users at refugee hearings etc.
  • Assist in completing various documents for the clients
  • Provide supportive counseling to help clients to deal with newcomer issues
  • Refer the Roma adults and families facing settlement, school, or other issues to the appropriate agencies or settlement workers
  • Translate and interpret from Hungarian to English and vice versa
  • Organize information sessions on settlement related topics to make clients aware of their rights and responsibilities and have an understanding of the immigration process
  • Encourage participation of the Roma who speak various languages in organization’s activities
  • Maintain relations with other agencies serving newcomers
  • Interpret and advocate on service-users behalf at various governmental agencies such as social services etc.
  • Roma community building and involvement in Roma community activities
  • Reports keep records of individual clients, participants, attendance of volunteers, outreach efforts, etc.
  • Any relevant duties as assigned by supervisor


  • Minimum of two years’ experience in settlement working with newcomers
  • Degree in social work or a degree related to settlement or a combination of equivalent education and / or experience
  • Experience working with the Roma community
  • Familiar with the barriers and issues facing refugees and immigrants
  • Knowledge of the citizenship, immigration and refugee system and processes in Canada
  • Proven sensitivity, understanding and commitment to newcomer issues
  • Knowledge of various community based resources and the ability to research and find resources that address client settlement issues
  • Excellent cross-cultural communication and writing skills
  • Knowledge and experience working with culturally diverse groups in a community based setting
  • Strong settlement counseling, group facilitation and implementing programs that address the needs of newcomers
  • Knowledge of program measurement, i.e., logic model application, focus group, surveying techniques
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Commitment to and understanding of anti-racism and anti-discrimination practices
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and to contribute constructively to a health working environment
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Fluency (speaking, reading, writing) in Hungarian is required; fluency (speaking, reading, writing) in Romanian is considered an asset
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (police check) is required for this position
  • Competency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet use are required for

This is a Bargaining Unit Position
Salary: $25.47 – $27.01 per hour
