The Self-Employment Facilitator will provide information, support and coaching services to newcomer and immigrant women with a focus on women on those who wish to start their own small business or social enterprise. This position works closely with the project’s Job Developer/Employment Counsellor position as a part of the team to deliver a newly funded Women’s Employment Support program.

Reports To: Manager, Mobile Settlement


Self-Employment/Entrepreneurship Facilitation

  • Delivers the curriculum-based self-employment readiness training program
  • Conducts assessment and selection of participants, and supports participants through the business development process (providing guidance, and feedback on assignments and final deliverables)
  • Works closely with the project’s management team and appropriate stakeholders/partners to support participants through the entire continuum of service delivery (from business idea, to launch, to business sustainability)
  • Identifies key resources for participants around legal requirements, market data, promotion, and other areas regarding business start-up
  • Connects with business contacts and entrepreneurs in the community, to arrange coaching/mentoring opportunities for participants
  • Provides one-to-one support for participants throughout the program duration, with a focus on those interested in self- employment, and with other participants as required
  • Arranges for guest facilitators, volunteers and mentors
  • Ensures business plans are completed and presented at the end of the training program
  • Other duties as required

Outreach and networking

  • Assists with the development of program promotional strategies and materials
  • Disseminates promotional materials through appropriate channels as outlined in project’s outreach plan
  • Conducts outreach to diverse communities in the North York area
  • Meets regularly with entrepreneurship stakeholders to strengthen partnership
  • Conducts research and identifies community resources on self-employment/entrepreneurship
  • Develops working relationships and engages other community organizations/partners
  • Assists participants through the application process by providing orientation to NYCH programs, project’s entry requirements, and assists in completing program application
  • Participates in NYCH and program meetings, trainings and events as required

Documentation, evaluation and reporting

  • Ensures, project outcomes, as stated in project’s logic models, are closely monitored and achieved
  • Conducts evaluation of groups and collects summarized data for further program development
  • Tracks program spending and submits advance requests, receipts and program expenses
  • Collects and inputs date and registrant information into appropriate forms and databases
  • Produces statistical and narrative reports on monthly basis
  • Attends NYCH and program meetings, and participates in the Project Advisory Committee
  • Other duties as required



  • The minimum level of education preferred is a degree/diploma in financial management or business administration, entrepreneurship, or community economic development

Experience and Skills

  • Knowledge about community economic development, entrepreneurship/self-employment, and/or have small business experience, including business and financial planning
  • Experience working with vulnerable and diverse populations, including adult education experience
  • Experience working with diverse low-income communities, including people from diverse cultures, levels of ability and education, and language groups
  • Experience in providing one-on-one support (assessment, problem-solving)
  • Demonstrated skills in supervision of volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills in English, written and verbal; other languages an asset
  • Excellent computer skills, and savvy in social media

Other Requirements:

  • Typically works regular hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with occasional (planned) evening/weekend work, and some travel required within the GTA.
  • A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required when necessary for the position.

Start Date: April 24th, 2017
Hours: Part-time (21 hours/week) 50 week contract
Hourly Rate: $25/ hour
Location: Lawrence Square Mall Site
