The Halton Multicultural Council (HMC) is a community agency dedicated to enabling every individual, regardless of racial/ethnic origin, to participate as full and active members of this community by fostering mutual respect and understanding of each other. HMC’s LINC Teachers work hard to inspire and instruct their students and help them to maximize their language learning potential and our Language team has a supportive team environment.


  • Create monthly-theme based daily lesson plans in compliance with the Canadian Language Benchmark: Revised Canadian Language Benchmarks 2012
  • Source, research, and deliver daily effective learner-centred, real-world task-based, and competency-based lessons in compliance with the Canadian Language Benchmarks to ensure learning outcomes to adult newcomers to Canada
  • Conduct exit assessments for students completing the program prior to full implementation of Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) – the PBLA will not be implemented in the summer program
  • Provide individual assistance and guidance to students on all aspects of English language skills acquisition
  • Develop and maintain a culturally-sensitive, warm, welcoming, and stimulating classroom environment
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests
  • Enforce agency's guidelines and policies for attendance, behaviour, and punctuality in the classroom
  • Maintain accurate and complete student attendance records, bus ticket report and other documentation as required
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities prior to classes
  • Facilitate open and flexible communication with Language Program staff and other HMC staff to promote the LINC Program
  • Keep Language Program Coordinator informed of area activities and of any significant concerns
  • Ensure work area is clean, secure, and well maintained
  • Participate in and contribute to potlucks, field trips, staff meetings, and professional development/training
  • Monitor class attendance and issues as well as follow up via phone calls or emails to students
  • Keep students informed of all HMC programs, events, activities, workshops, and seminars, etc.
  • Participate in agency events (Multiculturalism Day, fundraising, AGM and etc.)
  • Complete special projects and other duties as assigned

Skills and Technology

  • Excellent oral and written English skills as well as public speaking and report writing
  • Cross-cultural communication skills and the ability to work with professionals from diverse cultures, other Language Program staff, volunteers, and employer partners
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; sensitive to the needs of immigrants and able to promote a collaborative team atmosphere
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, diplomacy, and tact
  • Organizing, planning, multi-tasking, and team work skills
  • Ability to work independently with solid time management and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills and willingness to introduce technology into the LINC classroom


  • Post secondary education in a related field and TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) certificate from an accredited institution recognized by TESL Ontario
  • Valid certification by TESL Ontario
  • PBLA training preferred
  • Understanding and application of the Canadian Benchmarks and LINC Curriculum Guidelines
  • 3 years experience teaching adults of diverse cultural backgrounds in LINC/ESL environment
  • Ability to gauge learners' progress and modify instruction to address learning gaps and document in periodic assessment reports
  • Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Internet, and E-mail
  • Able to establish and maintain positive relationships with clients, colleagues, and key stakeholders
  • An understanding of the unique experiences facing newcomer families and the process of integration into a new society
  • Sensitivity to immigrant population and learning needs of clients
  • Compliance with funder requirements and agency policies and protocols
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service and a strong team player
  • Experience in instructing Canadian Language Benchmark Levels
  • Must be punctual, reliable, disciplined, and professional

Evening classes - contract from January to June 2019 - 12 hours/week - timing to be discussed. Excellent chance contract will be continued.
Rate of pay $38.63/hour
