As part of our institutional co-management team, the successful candidate will be expected to share responsibility for Inter Pares’ financial, administrative, and political well-being and direction. The co-management team operates on a parity basis – equal salary, equal responsibility – guided by principles of consensus-based decision-making. All co-managers participate in management committees, administration, raising funds, donor relations, board relations, external representation, and public engagement.

Finance Management Responsibilities

Collaborating with program managers as needed to:

  • build program budgets and establish program financial management systems during program proposal/inception phases
  • support counterpart organizations during audits
  • establish/improve counterparts’ financial reporting systems
  • advise and build capacity of program managers in financial management

Collaborating with the finance director in:

  • Managing audits
  • Generating forecasts and cashflow projections for monthly finance committee meetings
  • Preparing for the year-end financial reporting and reconciliation
  • Leading the annual all-staff institutional budgeting process
  • Generating analysis such as long-term trends and forecasts and reviewing reserve levels
  • Developing financial policies and systems as needed
  • Engaging in conversations within the sector and with government on operational issues

Taking the lead on:

  • Payroll management and HR-related responsibilities (issuing ROEs, reviewing letters of employment and understanding)
  • Investment management
  • Balance sheet analysis
  • Maintaining an inventory of capital assets and investments
  • Reviewing and processing counterpart financial reports
  • Bookkeeping: account payables and receivable, transfers to counterparts, expense reports, bank reconciliation statements, GST & HST reports, assorted accounting tasks
  • Identified projects to improve Inter Pares’ financial management systems

Office and building management responsibilities

  • Identifying, contracting, and supervising repairs and maintenance of the building and grounds
  • Purchasing office equipment and overseeing office maintenance contracts
  • Monitoring petty cash
  • Membership management (liaising with Inter Pares’ general members, ensuring membership dues are paid)


The candidate should have the following experience, skills, and attributes:

  • Thorough understanding of Canadian generally accepted accounting principles
  • Solid experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or financial management and administrative management
  • Experience working in the not-for-profit sector is preferred
  • Commitment to social justice and feminist principles
  • Commitment to diversity and anti-oppression values
  • Creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience with group decision-making
  • Good English communication skills, written and oral; French communication skills are a strong asset
  • Knowledge of additional languages is an asset (particularly Spanish, Arabic, or Portuguese)
  • Ability to work both in a team and without direct supervision
  • Competence in a variety of computer programs, including word processing, database and spreadsheets
  • Knowledge of fundraising and accounting software is an asset
  • Ability to work irregular hours on occasion (a modest contribution towards childcare expenses is available)

Salary and benefits

This job is eligible for a salary ranging from $67,484 to $82,547. It also comes with a generous benefits package that includes extended health coverage and retirement planning benefits. All new staff begin with four weeks of vacation, which increases with seniority.
