About the Position:

The Employment Preparedness Specialist position is funded by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC.) The Employment Preparedness Specialist is a multidisciplinary team member and works directly with newcomers, helping to connect them with resources to bridge their education, validate credentials, conduct job searches, prepare assist cover letters and resumes, and prepare for job interviews and provide them with employment-related sessions/workshops. In addition to the activities mentioned, The Employment Preparedness Specialist will be maintaining confidential records and writing reports.

This position reports to the Manager of Newcomer Settlement Programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize and implement the various programs for employment readiness for newcomers
  • Identify clients’ barrier to employment and make the appropriate recommendation
  • Maintain an excellent working knowledge of local labour market trends and community resources
  • Conduct needs assessments and helps prepare career plans
  • Help clients adjust to a new system
  • Provide one on one job searching and coaching
  • Assisting clients with resume and cover letter writing
  • Helping to improve interview skills of clients, ie. Conduct mock interviews
  • Access job market and liaise with organizations to find job opportunities to share with clients
  • Conduct workshops on job searching, resume and cover letter writing, and interview skills
  • Participate in networking events with employers
  • Provide information and referral
  • Follow up and provide ongoing support to clients
  • Ensure that all equipment and supplies are in a safe working condition
  • Develop communications tools, promotional, and outreach materials
  • Conduct outreach activities with a diverse range of groups to raise awareness regarding the program
  • Ensure that all programs are operating in a safe and positive environment, addressing safety concerns promptly, and focusing on using a proactive approach
  • Provide referrals to additional support services
  • In collaboration with other staff and shared care partners, identify clients with complex needs
  • Compile and produce accurate statistics and reports as related to the position
  • Maintain supportive relationships with clients
  • Any other job duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary Education in Social Services, Human Services, Recruitment Services, Business Management or education in a relevant field combined with at least 3 to 5 years of experience
  • Enthusiasm, patience and understanding of issues that newcomers face when seeking employment
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills and the ability to communicate information to a variety of stakeholders effectively
  • Excellent computer skills with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Highly organized with strong documentation skills and attention to detail with the appropriate handling of confidential and sensitive information
  • Exceptional project and time management skills, including planning, prioritization, and follow up
  • Proven ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to work flexible hours and in a fast-paced environment

Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, have regular access to a reliable vehicle and provide proof of adequate vehicle insurance
  • A satisfactory current Vulnerable Sector Screening (Criminal Record Check) report
  • Current CPR and First-Aid certification

Position Type: Full Time
Hours: Full Time, 37.5 hours
(Some evenings and weekends work is required)
