Northwood Neighbourhood Services (NNS), a charitable organization, has the vision to be a Centre of Excellence in providing settlement support and services. Its mission is to provide programs and services that empower individuals, families, and groups to achieve, maintain and enhance a state of physical, mental, and social well-being. Drama as a Second Language (DSL) provides theatre and arts programming on a not-for-profit basis to newcomer youth between the ages of 13 to 29 since 2017. Together, Northwood Neighbourhood Services and Drama as a Second Language will provide a summer theatre and arts program this summer entitled West End Expressions - funded by the Toronto Arts Council.
West End Expressions (Summer Theatre and Arts Program)
West End Expressions (WEE) is a 7-week summer theatre and arts program, which aims to empower newcomer youth between the ages of 13 and 18 as they socially integrate into their immediate communities.
WEE will have a set group of teaching artists providing drama and arts education consistently throughout the summer. The teaching artists hired for the program would provide drama, vocal, and dance programming. The program will also include workshops from community guest artists. Our priority in this program is to provide opportunities to newcomer and first-generation Canadian teaching artists the opportunity to mentor newcomer youth.
By the end of the program, the youth along with teaching artists and community guest artists will theatrically perform an original collective creation based on the participants’ narratives and interests.
