Position Title: Community Engagement Worker, Weston and Mount Dennis
Contract start and end dates: April 2021 – March 31, 2022
Rate of Pay: $25.00/hour
Reports To: Manager, Community Development
Hours: Part-time (14 hours/week)
Location: Remote/possibly community sites when safe/permitted

Position Summary

Are you interested in working for an organization that values community leadership and engagement? Do you have a strong background in working with and engaging 2SLGBTQ, Black, Indigenous and other equity seeking groups? NYCH is seeking a passionate community organizer to provide mentorship and support to resident leaders in the Weston and Mount Dennis neighbourhoods, whilst also ensuring residents in the community are provided with access to information, resources and tools to address pressing needs. You will work alongside residents and stakeholders to map and vision collaborative and sustainable neighbourhood development opportunities for communities experiencing gentrification. You will be on a team of staff who work with adults, youth and families to build strong and thriving communities built on the principles of equity, inclusion, social justice and centering resident engagement, needs and interests.

Main Responsibilities

  • Co- facilitate the Weston and Mount Dennis Steering Committee meetings to work with residents and stakeholders seeking to increase residents’ participation in neighbourhood development opportunities
  • Provide mentorship and support for resident led initiatives, including mutual aid projects, neighbourhood grants, and other opportunities
  • Oversee the social media page for the Weston and Mount Dennis Our Strong Neighbourhood Page
  • Coordinate workshops and trainings for residents on topics including workers’ rights, financial resiliency, digital access and other relevant topics
  • Collaborate with fellow Community Development staff to facilitate leadership opportunities for residents to engage in community development and community organizing around pressing needs identified by the residents of the Weston and Mount Dennis Communities
  • Attend and participate in stakeholder meetings including the YSW NIA table and the YSW Economic Working Group
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships and liaise with community residents, the City, developers, landlords, and other community organizations and stakeholders
  • Maintain and foster positive relationships with funders, elected officials and government agencies
  • Provide verbal and written reports to the agency, community/stakeholders and funders

Required Qualifications

Education

The minimum level of education required is a post-secondary degree or diploma in community development, social work, social sciences, urban planning or related field, and or equivalent community development experience.

Experience, Competencies & Skills

  • 2 years’ experience working in community-based non-profits and working in community development/ community organizing/ or community driven neighborhood planning.
  • 2 years’ experience coordinating community led/ community driven initiatives such as leadership training and knowledge exchange programs and supporting local campaigns.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local issues in Weston and Mount Dennis (and or communities in the north/northwest part of Toronto)
  • Anti-oppression – Demonstrated experience working with 2SLGBTQ+ Communities, Black Communities, Indigenous Communities, and other equity seeking groups that have historically been left out of neighbourhood planning process, and demonstrated commitment to addressing systemic oppression and barriers to civic engagement
  • Experience providing information and warm referrals to residents seeking supports on food security, housing, mental health, financial empowerment etc.
  • Critical thinking skills – ability to see the big picture (e.g., systemic issues that impact clients), observe and analyze emerging/changing community needs, opportunities for new partnerships, use information from different sources/perspectives in decision-making
  • Teamwork- Excellent collaboration, partnership and network building skills, act as a support and resource for peers
  • Effective time management- plan, prioritize and organize tasks; juggle multiple responsibilities
  • Written and verbal communication – active listener and ability to frame and communicate clear, concise and accurate reports, plans, proposals, presentations and stories to highlight community impact

Additional Requirements

A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required for this position

Working Conditions

Works 2 days a week, (schedule to be determined with supervisor according to program needs), with some flexibility for evening and weekend work as required. Responsible for carrying/caring for a laptop and cell phone.
