About Position

PCHS is seeking to hire two full-time Crisis Support Workers to support an expansion of the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team (MCRRT), provided by the CMHA Peel Dufferin. The Crisis Support Worker's primary responsibility will be to respond to adults in crisis who may be experiencing mental illness and addiction symptoms. This position includes going mobile in the community and responding to telephone crisis calls as required. The Crisis Support Worker works in collaboration with other members of the crisis services team. The Crisis Support Worker will use a systemic approach for assessing adults in crisis to stabilize and manage the current crisis. The Mental Health Crisis Support Worker conducts risk and safety assessments, supports and connects the client with the community's appropriate resources.

Qualifications and skills required

• University Degree in Social work, BSc. Nursing or a degree in Occupational Therapy
• Must be a Registered Health Professional and adhere to standards of practice as per designated college
• Evidence of very sound assessment, organizational and prioritization skills with the ability to work well in stressful situations
• Understanding and knowledge of the diverse communities with an emphasis on the South Asian Community
• Minimum 2 years of experience working in the mental health sector, preferably in the community
• Knowledge and principles of crisis theory and intervention
• Experience with crisis intervention techniques and theory-based practise working with people experiencing symptoms of mental illness and addiction
• Demonstrated knowledge on risk assessments, suicide prevention
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible and cope with ambiguity in the system
• Knowledge of family and social systems
• Demonstrated ability to intervene effectively in clinical situations requiring the management of disturbed behaviour
• The ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary
• Consistent commitment to professional development
• A good understanding of the Mental Health Act and DSM V as it relates to crisis intervention
• Ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with a multidisciplinary team and other agencies in the community
• Understanding of the basic use of psychotropic medications, psychiatric diagnosis and formulation of the mental health assessment for a diverse age group and population
• Able to function well under pressure and in a fluid environment
• Demonstrated ability to use computer programs for data entry for assessments
• Proficiency in a second language would be an asset
• Strong interpersonal skills, be able to work independently and within a team
• Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal) including presentation skills
• Excellent working skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet and email
• Familiarity with Cloud technology and SharePoint will be an asset

Requirements

• Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License, have regular access to a reliable vehicle and provide proof of adequate vehicle insurance
• A satisfactory current Vulnerable Sector Screening (Criminal Record Check) report
• Current CPR and First-Aid certification

Key Responsibilities

• Provide immediate response on the crisis line and determine initial triage when a client calls in crisis
• Provide crisis intervention to understand the factors contributing to the current difficulties
• Provide support and follow-up post-crisis with ongoing telephone support or by connecting clients to appropriate follow-up agencies
• Contract with clients and families the need for further clinical service, including mobile crisis response as appropriate
• Complete a mental health assessment for clients in crisis
• Recommend measures to help protect others by developing safety plans
• Assess the risk to crisis workers in the outreach environment
• Support the caregivers by working to reduce conflict between the client and their caregivers
• Educate the community about the functioning and limitations of the mobile crisis service
• Form positive relationships and strong partnerships with hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and mental health and social service agencies to build an effective delivery of crisis service in the community
• Utilize sound working knowledge of resources, partnerships and working relationships and participate in ongoing professional development and supervision around crisis work
• Assist in identifying and developing goals towards understanding prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals with mental illness
• Attend and actively participate in team meetings and other client-related meetings and program meetings as required
• Maintain appropriate record-keeping/documentation and client files, statistical and outcome measurement tools as required by the Crisis Program and PCHS policies and procedures
• Participate in agency and community committees and workgroups as requested by the program supervisor
• Work effectively and collaboratively with program teams, internal and external to PCHS
• Other related duties, as assigned

Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week
(Evenings, weekends and shift work is required)
