Job Summary:

The Community Connections Network Facilitator will promote social and professional networking that addresses language and cultural barriers faced by newcomers to Canada; the successful candidate will be responsible for generating groups and mentoring match connections to facilitate active involvement of individuals and families.

Responsibilities:

Volunteer Recruitment: researches and explores avenues for volunteer involvement in support of newcomers to Canada

  • Regularly promotes engagement of the community through volunteerism and networking that enhances newcomer engagement (brochures, fairs, website listings, poster board flyers, Volunteer Orientation, and educational presentations)
  • Actively recruits from corporations, businesses, general public, cultural groups and community service organizations
  • Develops outreach plan that defines individual and family benefits of supporting newcomers through cultural exchange and professional mentoring
  • Follows up on all internal and external referrals of volunteer interest
  • Ensures that volunteer opportunities are promoted internally & externally
  • Recruits bilingual casual volunteer supports, to assist in evaluation of newcomers’ satisfaction and to engage cultural groups with specific needs
  • Schedules, coordinates and facilitates volunteer group training
  • Maintains constant communication with group leaders, including regular follow-up regarding numbers, forms, commitments, and supports

Volunteer Support & Newcomer Engagement: engages current volunteers in regular opportunities to provide social & professional supports for cultural exchange through mentoring and group involvement

  • Orients volunteers about newcomer challenges and contributions, the Centre’s mission, values and goals, and the volunteer roles and responsibilities
  • Completes volunteer intake and interview protocols to ensure appropriate matches for newcomers
  • Receives documented intake and initial assessment of internal newcomer referrals & completes placement process for newcomers to a match, group supports or external community supports
  • Regularly assesses outcomes for matches and newcomer group involvement
  • Gathers and organizes support materials for group facilitators
  • Manages approximately 300+ volunteers at a time
  • Develops training workshops to support cultural exchange and professional development
  • Takes a lead role for the Community Connections Program in response to special needs or projects when requested by the Manager (e.g. Family Summer Day Camp, Conversational Circles, Newcomer Picnic)
  • Works with Manager to strengthen neighborhood connections to community centres/libraries/resource centres/faith communities/grassroots advocacy & support groups
  • Facilitates network meetings, communications and celebrations
  • Coordinates, organizes, and attends networking and community engagement training or events that enhance the client’s experience (e.g. manage volunteers, arrange venue and equipment, etc.)
  • Ensure high interest levels for clients and volunteers through the provision of a comprehensive and wide ranging series of professional and social networking events

Newcomer Recruitment and Outreach to Newcomer Community: engages newcomers in programming through scheduled and consistent outreach and recruitment plans.

  • Coordinate and facilitate outreach opportunities to meet newcomers
  • Recruit newcomers to participate in programming and increase civic engagement
  • Maintain positive connections with internal programs and external agencies (ex. ESL and LINC schools, community centers, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with external organizations to increase newcomer recruitment (ex. University of Western Ontario, cultural organizations, Librarians Without Borders, etc.)

Information Management/Record-Keeping: keeps accurate and effective records to reflect volunteer and newcomer involvement and interest

  • Registers, tracks and evaluates newcomers’ satisfaction with mentoring matches and group involvement for professional networking
  • Participates in team planning and actively engages other staff to collaborate in delivering successful outcomes for our newcomer clients
  • Ensures timely completion of all monthly reporting requirements
  • Regularly reviews community information resources/supplies/ideas to support mentoring and group supports
  • Sets 3-month work plans and evaluates quarterly targets for newcomer “matches”, group involvement, volunteer recruitment and community outreach to meet required targets
  • Develops appropriate printed materials, website info, resources, other social media, with IT/graphic support
  • On-going collection of information on target population (needs, gaps, numbers) and research strategies (successful programs in other communities) to address these needs
  • Compiles data and completes month-end reports on a timely basis

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Works with Manager and team to ensure that the intake & referral process and supports for newcomers are completed in a timely manner, supported, and successful
  • Works with Manager to identify new supports to assist newcomers with emerging needs
  • Participation and support to other Community Connections staff and other programs at LCCLC
  • Proactive in outreach and feedback in response to newcomer needs for service or social supports
  • Prepares for and attends Community Connections’ team meetings and LCCLC staff meetings, as required
  • Involved in fundraising
  • Maintains client and volunteer confidentiality
  • Provides regular feedback on Community Connections newcomer involvement to Manager
  • Works cooperatively with internal and external newcomer support programs
  • Adheres to LCCLC policies and procedures
  • Records flex-time, mileage, monthly outreach locations, program statistics and other organizational or programming data as requested, and submits monthly, to Community Connections Manager
  • Other duties as required by Supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience (Community outreach, volunteer recruitment, etc.)
  • B.A. in Social Sciences or minimum 8 years community work with newcomers to Canada
  • In-depth knowledge of the newcomer settlement and integration process
  • Understanding the role of community volunteers and the value of civic involvement
  • Available to work irregular hours in the evenings and on weekends
  • Self-motivated individual with strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Be respectful of clients’ and partners’ privacy and maintain confidentiality
  • Good understanding of immigrant settlement issues and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal, facilitation and presentation skills; verbal, and written skills
  • Needs own transportation
  • Valid driver’s license and third party insurance
  • First Aid & CPR
  • Proficient computer skills in MS Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook)
  • Experience and interest to work in a multi-culturally diverse organization
  • Second language is an asset

This is a Full-Time, (35-hrs/week) Contract Position to cover for employee on Leave of Absence (LOA)
