The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) requires a Violence Against Women (VAW) Coordinator.
The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) is a registered charitable non-profit organization, founded in 1962 and committed to improve the quality of life of the Jamaican, Caribbean and African Canadian Communities and others in need. The JCA offers social services and culturally appropriate programs such as employment, newcomer settlement, violence against women, youth, seniors and parenting.
Position Summary:
Working under the supervision of the Program Manager and within the goals and objectives of the program, the Violence Against Women Coordinator will work from the JCA and other community locations providing counseling, information, advocacy, referral, workshops and quality VAW support services to clients.
Reports to: Program Manager
Responsibilities:
- Develop, evaluate and implement strategies to resolve client issues
- Assist clients in re-establishing positive family units/support systems
- Consult with other professionals in social services, medical and legal systems to provide comprehensive intervention
- Advocate on behalf of clients as required
- Network with other agencies and support groups
- Provide a broad range of therapeutic services to women and children (i.e. related to physical, emotional or sexual abuse)
- Provide crisis intervention and supportive services as required
- Provide information and supportive services to other referring agents and liaise closely with other service providers to ensure optimum delivery of services
- Participate in case conferences as necessary
- Provide culturally sensitive services
- Conduct outreach and promotion
- Other duties as assigned by Management
Program Administration
- Write client case notes to meet JCA, professional and legal requirements
- Prepare written plan of care, risk/needs assessments reports
- Ensure that all documentation is reviewed and coordinated
- Respond in writing to requests for information from other agencies as appropriate
- Keep accurate records of clients and their disposition
- Supervise, train and evaluate VAW Counsellor
- Other duties as assigned by Management
Community Relations and Communication
- Participate in local committees and activities of relevance to the VAW program
- Encourage opportunities for intra/inter agency collaboration, community advisory groups and citizen participation
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in social work (MSW, BSW or other relevant qualification)
- Minimum of 4 years of related experience
- Supervisory experience as asset
- Working knowledge of the Child and Family Services Act
- Proficiency in case-management and crisis intervention
- Experience with a culturally diverse population
- Experience working with immigrant families
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Excellent interpersonal and group presentation skills
- Current police clearance check
- Understanding of anti-racism and non-discrimination practices and anti-oppression framework
- Registration with the Ontario college of social workers other relevant registration is an asset
- Experience working with the Caribbean and African Canadian communities
